O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and graduated from Wheaton North High School in 1981. The model appeared in commercials for some time before moving out to Los Angeles. O'Grady began her career modelling for Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She appeared in 1988's romantic comedy, She's Having a Baby and was later cast as a recurring character in ABC Drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. Other guest appearances include TV shows in independent film, as well as several others. Donna Abandando played her first principal role on ABC's NYPD Blue, a police drama. The role of the tall blonde squad secretary was performed from 1993 to 1996. For each of those seasons, she was awarded an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance of a Drama Series. She won the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1995 for outstanding performances by an ensemble in a drama series.
